The Works Chelmsford

Chelmsford is home to a plethora of restaurant chains since receiving city status in 2012, including Giraffe, Bill’s, Las Iguanas and Ask Italian. But there’s a new independent chain on the block!

The Works

The Works is a restaurant that can only be described as: pure heaven. The Works Chelmsford is the third branch to open in the family-run chain, serving up delicious savoury and sweet waffles and crepes with tasty fillings, handmade ice creams and sauces galore.

The main selling point to The Works is that all of their ice creams and gelato are home made, completely from scratch. They’re all made from authentic ingredients imported from Italy, such as 100% pistachio paste for the pistachio flavoured ice cream.

All the ice cream and gelato is also made in branch each day from scratch, and you can even watch them making it at certain times! The ingredients are also made and ground down in store, like the snickers for the snickers ice cream and crunchie bars for the honeycomb.

The Works is a sit down restaurant, but you can also order to takeaway, too! If you’re stuck on what flavour ice cream or gelato to go for (I wouldn’t blame you) you can stroll right up to the counter and sample the various flavours for yourself.

Alongside fun industrial decor and plenty of comfy seating, the restaurant has a really chilled out atmosphere and the staff are fun and attentive to make the experience as a whole – great fun! It’s miles better than your typical chain dessert places (like Creams) and the prices are justified seeing as you’re going to be tucking into freshly back and home made treats. There’s lots to choose from on the menu, from buttermilk pancakes and chocolate sundaes, to savoury crepes and sweet waffles – the possibilities are endless!

I popped into the brand new Chelmsford branch with my friend Chloe to check out the new restaurant and to sample some of the delicious treats we’d seen all over their Instagram! We had a glass of prosecco each then had a look through the menu.

The restaurant has a relaxed and chilled atmosphere, with exposed lighting and an edgy wooden interior with plenty of seating arrangements available with leather chairs and couches. The Works has table service which waiters take on tablets, so the process is quick and easy!

After a few recommendations from the waiter, we finally decided what to order. Chloe went for the Hazelnut Heaven sundae on a waffle (white chocolate & 2 scoops of Kinder Bueno ice cream, Kinder Bueno chocolate, chocotella sauce and whipped cream) and I went for the Chocolate Honeycomb Cheesecake (chocolate honeycomb, mascarpone cheese, biscuit crumbs, toffee & chocolate sauce) and a cheeky extra scoop of Snickers ice cream!

Hazelnut Heaven

Chloe ordered the Hazelnut Heaven sundae (£6.50) and opted for it to go on a waffle for £2 extra. The waffle was crispy on the outside and lovely and fluffy inside, piled high with 2 scoops of Kinder Bueno ice cream, white chocolate, Kinder Bueno chocolate, chocotella sauce and whipped cream.

The waffle was warm, and the Kinder Bueno ice cream was deliciously sweet. The chunks of Kinder Bueno were an absolute treat too, making for the perfect sweet treat! I loved the little personalised wafers too – a lovely touch!

Chocolate Honeycomb Cheesecake

I ordered the Chocolate Honeycomb Cheesecake (£7.50). The waffle again was crispy on the outside and fluffy inside, and it was folded over and packed to the brim with chocolate honeycomb, mascarpone cheese, biscuit crumbs and toffee and chocolate sauce. I also had a cheeky scoop of Snickers ice cream on the side, too!

The chocolate honeycomb cheesecake waffle was mouth-wateringly good, with just the right amount of chocolate and sweetness, combined with the cool scoops of mascarpone cheese. The Snickers ice cream was amazing, too. Smooth and chocolately, with chunks of chocolate and nuts blended in. I could happily eat a bowl of that!

The Works Chelmsford is a lovely new addition to Chelmsford, and I can’t wait to visit again for their oreo, biscoff and strawberry flavours!

I was invited to The Works for a complimentary meal in return for a review. All images, thoughts and waffle-loving my own!
