Postcards From: Somerset | Burnham-On-Sea Carnival

I went to the Burnham-On-Sea carnival last week; over 35,000 people lined the streets to watch the parade and over £10,000 was raised for local charities as a result of donations throughout the evening. The atmosphere was electric, people were poured out onto the street warming themselves on hot drinks, settling down on the kerbside to watch the parade and enjoying their candy floss and treats…

The carnival started at 8:00pm and honestly, I’ve never seen anything quite like it before! It beats Nottinghill Carnival hands down! Over 50 floats and 50 walking individuals paraded through the town, all competing for prizes awarded by the judges on the night. There were 18 categories that floats and individuals are entered into and scored on, with the top 4 of each category announced on burnham-on-sea.com the next day. Gremlins Carnival Club took the top spot with their Lights, Camera, Action entry; a stunning vintage black-and-white Hollywood theme with old style cameras and clapper boards, and even a giant King-Kong swinging a woman about!

I’ve found it super hard to whittle down all of the photos to a small-ish post, (taken on my new Olympus E-PL7 btw which I bloody LOVE) but I hope you think they’re just as beautiful as I do!

Oh wow, this looks incredible! I love how much effort everyone has clearly put into the floats and costumes – they're like works of art! It's also wonderful that they use the parade as an opportunity to raise money for charity – what a brilliant idea.
