The Breakfast Club at Spitalfields

What’s better than having a lazy, chilled out Sunday? Well, having a lazy Sunday morning with pancakes for breakfast at The Breakfast Club of course!

I’ve never really been a breakfast kind of gal.

I usually just have a banana, or a lukewarm pot of instant porridge, (exciting, I know) so I thought heck, why not treat myself to a big pancake-y breakfast?

I headed to The Breakfast Club at Spitalfields with my friend Jade. We queued for around 30 minutes but it wasn’t any bother. We’ve learnt the art of queuing, after we queued for over 2 hours for a bubblewrap waffle…

The 30 minute wait flew by though, as we checked out the menu to suss out what we would order as soon as we sat down. Once we started queuing inside, we had a real feel for the place. It was buzzing with loud music, a happy atmosphere and exposed, rustic decor.

There’s a memory wall as you queue up, where you can pin polaroid photos, train tickets, receipts and postcards. It’s fun having a look at where people have visited from! There were notes and memos pinned to the board, and currency notes from around the world.

As it was quite busy, we were seated on a long table with other people. But it wasn’t an issue, there was still enough space to chat and have a gossip!

Because we knew we wanted to order sugary, sweet pancakes, we ordered tea and a green tea (to try and balance out the calories…). We browsed the menu and decided on two pancake dishes, the Pancakes & Berries and the Salted Caramel Banoffee Pancakes. We decided to share them both because we just couldn’t choose between the two – but can you blame us?!

Pancakes & Berries

The pancakes of the GODS. Fluffy, sweet pancakes stacked high, served with a dollop of vanilla cream, scattered seasonal berries and drizzled in maple syrup.

The pancakes were soft to cut in to, and had a cakey texture. I’m used to thin, sugary, lemony pancakes so this was a wonderful alternative. The fresh fruit were plump and full of flavour, and the vanilla cream was deliciously sweet and complimented the pancakes beautifully.

The fruit had a lovely sugary-soft glaze to them too, and worked so well with the sweet maple syrup. The portion was super generous, so you could easily share this dish with a friend, or have it to yourself if you’re in need of some pancake TLC!

Salted Caramel Banoffee Pancakes

These pancakes were everything and more.

Again, deliciously sweet and fluffy pancakes stacked high, but this time layered with banana and vanilla cream, drizzled in salted caramel and chocolate sauce.

These pancakes were deliciously chocolatey, gooey and indulgent. The batter was delicately soft and sweet, and the bananas gave the pancakes a fresh taste.

Jade and I halved the pancakes so we got to try each, and I must say, it’s a difficult choice to choose between the two! My favourite, by a smidge, was probably the salted caramel banoffee ones – but then I’m a big sweet, chocolate fan!

The pancakes are both priced at £9.50 each. It may seem a little steep for a stack of pancakes but they are by far the best pancakes I have ever, ever tasted! Plus you’re paying for the price of being in London, and the urban, rustic decor!

We paid the bill and then it dawned on me.

I’d seen on The Breakfast Club’s website that they had secret, hidden rooms which could be accessed by telling a waiter a secret code.Jade googled it and found the code, so she said to our waitress, “Can we please see The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town?”

She gave us a nod and soon enough, we were taken over to the SMEG fridge.

A little baffled, we opened the fridge door and was led through to a dark room with two flights of stairs.
