Red Letter Days: Afternoon Tea With The Big Cats at Paradise Wildlife Park

Paradise Wildlife Park afternoon tea experience

Red Letter Days held a blogger’s ambassador day at Paradise Wildlife Park in Broxbourne, for a day of trialling out Red Letter Day’sΒ Tea With a TigerΒ experience.

Afternoon tea with a tiger at Paradise Wildlife Park

Paradise Wildlife Park zoo keepers

The day started with a tour of the cat enclosure with Steve – quite possibly the most intelligent, passionate (and charming!) zoo keeper I have ever been in the company of. He was really knowledgeable about each and every animal, explaining more to us about why each big cat was there and how they are looked after at Paradise Wildlife Park.

Steve showed us around the big cat enclosures and showed us one particularly beautiful white tiger, but did you know that white tigers are only white because of selective breeding programmes? It’s sad to think that they’re force bred to have white fur but thankfully she was rescued from a circus, and now lives her life at the park being well fed, loved and looked after!

We looked around the other big cat enclosures and saw tigers, snow leopards, jaguars and lions.

We were also teased with video footage of a new baby jaguar called Kiera. She wasn’t ready for public viewing at the time – fingers crossed she will be soon – but she was an adorable, fluffy bundle with glistening beady eyes, such a beautiful little baby!

The cat enclosures are built in various sizes to accommodate each big cat, and there’s a raised walkway you can walk along to get a real up close and intimate view of the cats.

After an informative talk on the big cats, Steve also showed us around various parts of the park to see other animals, including a family of alpacas, a super chatty group of otters and the most adorable fluffy red lemur.

Next on the agenda? Afternoon tea in the Tree Tops Cafe!

The cafe is situated on the top of the raised walkway over the cat enclosure, so you have an incredible view of the cats going about their day to day lives. One wall of the cafe is a glass window looking straight into the enclosure, so you have a fantastic view of the elegant and majestic animals as you enjoy various savoury and sweet treats. It was amazing watching the cats, they’re just so fascinating to watch and appreciate.

We had a great spread of finger sandwiches, cakes, macaroons, biscuits, scones and savoury treats to feast on after a morning of walking and exploring. The scones were my favourite sweet treat offering; they were fluffy and crumbly, with soft cream and sweet jam on top – my favourite! I couldn’t resist a slice of the incredible chocolate fudge cake either; it was super soft and had the most delicious gooey chocolate centre.

Suitably full of all the afternoon treats, we were let loose to explore the park for the rest of the afternoon! I explored the Zoo with Fran, and we spent the majority of our time chatting to the family of otters because omg, THEY ARE SO ADORABLE.

There are so many animals to see at the park, including meerkats, pandas, zebras, camels, sloths and squirrel monkeys – to name but a few! The park has dozens of eateries, cafes and parks for everyone to enjoy, and a great gift shop with merchandise.

It’s worth a big mention here that Paradise Wildlife Park have recently been awarded the Zoological Society of Hertfordshire (ZSH) status, a registered charity raising funds to support wildlife conservation projects in the UK around the world. It’s an incredible place and every zoo keeper we came into contact with were knowledgeable, kind and passionate – so you know that the animals are in the best possible care!

I had no idea about white tigers, that’s so sad! This looked like such a fun day out although I’m now wishing I had a plate of cake for breakfast.

Chocolate fudge cake and big cats! That’s a afternoon tea experience. I had no idea about the white tigers, such a shame. It’s heartwarming to hear that some animals are rescued from Circus. I know that they have a good life at the zoo and sadly, they could never be released into the wild.
I will have to keep this in mind, or, even better, I will send the link to my husband, so he can “surprise” me. :)) xx
