6 Things to Do on A Trip to Weymouth

I recently went to Weymouth for a week staycation and was SUPER lucky with the hot weather! We managed to squeeze so much into our week trip, too.

The Beach Side Leisure Bar

We stayed at Waterside Holiday Park & Spa so luckily this handy bar was just across the road from us on the sea front. The family-run cafe served up hearty meals such as fish & chips, (which of course I ate copious amounts of) burgers, salads, pasta and a range of hot and cold food.

The beach side leisure bar served up a range of popular cocktails and drinks too, including two frozen cocktails which just tasted insane; strawberry daiquiri and pina colada. The strawberry daiquiri was deliciously sweet, served with a fresh strawberry on the rim. The taste of rum was super strong considering its frozen state! I think the pina colada was my favourite out of the two – but only just. It was refreshing, super sweet and tasted really coconuty. It came served with a fresh slice of pineapple, too.

I think it’s fair to say I miss these frozen cocktails a lot, and would urge you to give them a try if you’re ever nearby!

 

Weymouth Beach

Voted best beach in the UK and ranked number 9 across the whole of Europe, it was a must that we visited the beach twice during our week there! The weather was very much on our side, so we enjoyed the long warm days relaxing on the deck chairs eating ice cream to keep cool! The beach was super beautiful; soft white sand, clear blue sea and warm enough to paddle in. I had to pinch myself a few times to check I wasn’t abroad somewhere hot.

 

Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre

I love going to Zoo’s, but I always feel a little weary about animal in cages, so going to Monkey World was a real eye opener.

The rescue centre assists governments around the world to help stop the smuggling of primates from the wild. Monkey World rescue primates from this illegal trade, and those that have suffered abuse or neglect, and rehabilitate them into natural living groups.

The centre is home to over 250 rescued and endangered primates, including gibbons, chimpanzees, orangutans and the cute little monkeys like the Capuchin and marmoset.

Jim Cronin MBE founded Monkey World – Ape Rescue Centre in 1987 – and established himself as an international expert in the rescue and rehabilitation of abused primates and helping to enforce treaties to protect primates from illegal trade, exploitation and abuse. Jim sadly passed away in March 2007 so the Jim Cronin Memorial Fund has been set up to support primate welfare and conservation around the world. Money is raised through food and drink purchases in the cafe, the gift shop and the ticket prices!

Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre is spread out over acres of land and the monkeys and chimps have so much room to explore and run around, it’s amazing! Well worth a visit if you find yourself in Dorset any time soon.

 

Lulworth Cove

I’d seen photos of Lulworth Cove all over the internet so I had to make sure I saw it in real life!

Lulworth Cove is a massive attraction for Dorset, especially those who love taking leisurely strolls and photographers who love getting a bit snap-happy. The cove was formed approximately 10,000 years ago by the powers of a river and the sea. It continues to transform into a narrow entrance, with exposed chalky erosion.

The steps at the east end of the beach lead to the Fossil Forest and Mupe Bay, which is only open weekends and the whole of August.

The walk down to Lulworth Cove was pretty challenging. It was really steep and quite slippery with crumbly rocks, but thankful it was a hot, sunny day so it was dry enough to walk down! The hard walk was worth the breathtaking views though – it really did feel as if we were somewhere abroad! The sea was crystal clear blue and the sand looked so soft. I’d have loved to walk down the steep steps onto the practically deserted beach – it was so beautiful!

 

Durdle Door

James took the signs for Lulworth Cove so we parked up there, and I’m so glad we did, because we got the best of both worlds!

Just a few steps away from Lulworth Cove, we spotted Durdle Door, a stunning arch way which is part of the Lulworth Cove and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The shingle beach can be reached on via a foot path and steps over the hill. It was so lovely watching people playing in the sea and having fun, it was such a beautiful day.

Durdle Door looked even more impressive in real life. The rock formation stood so proudly in the crashing waves; I feel so lucky to have been able to see it! Photos certainly don’t do it any justice, but I would definitely recommended a trip to Durdle Door.

 

Weymouth Pirate Adventure Mini Golf

If you’re a regular around here, you’ll know that I absolutely love crazy golf! We found a pirate adventure themed one nestled into the Sea Life grounds, so James and I headed there for the afternoon. Tickets cost just £6 to complete the 18 hole course, full of fun courses for everyone to enjoy!

I felt like it was a little run down and could certainly do with a little TLC, but it’s a great activity to do to fill a couple of spare hours on the seafront.

 

I can’t wait to visit Weymouth again. I really want to spend an evening at the harbour next time, sipping wine and watching the world float by!
